Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.

It's Banned Books Week.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries.

The purpose of this week is to highlight the value of free and open access to information and to support freedom to seek and express ideas. The theme of this year’s event is “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.”

Book banning efforts surged in 2021 and are continuing to gain momentum throughout the country. 2022 challenges and bans may be on on track to outpace those of 2021.

Sadly, we are now seeing book challenges and banning efforts here in Voorhees. Our opponents have openly championed censorship and book-banning and have made it clear that they will attempt to restrict the universe of books available to Voorhees students based on their extreme political views if they are elected.

We cannot let this happen.

Vote for freedom of expression. Vote for open access to information. Vote for reading.

Vote for Keeping Schools Smart.
